'25 February - theme: Black History Month

Will's Race for Home by Jewell Parker Rhodes

I was sent this book for free as an Arc from goodreads. It was called Will and contained no illustrations so I don't know if they are any good!

It was a great read for black history month, as this book is actually in an historical setting (unlike last year which was contemporary). Will's race for home deals with themes of racism post civil war and the emancipation proclamation. It’s appropriately written for the 8-13 age group but I do wish they wouldn’t have so many parentheses (they make me itchy) explaining how the situation makes Will feel. I found the deep discussion of Will’s relationship with his father is something that a kid from any time period would relate to. Fascinating period of history to set a book in, especially from the perspective of a black child. I really had my heart in my mouth at times such as during the red river crossing. Great little book!

Great tween aged historical novel, wouldn't surprise me if teachers start using it in class. 7/10
