Audiobook - The Ten Thousand Doors of January - Alix E. Harrow

Fun story: I decided to read this after taking my daughter to a play cafe (cafe with toys for those not in the know!). While I was there I was sat near a book club discussing this book and it sounded fantastic. So I listened to it and it was indeed fantastic.

Brilliant fantasy set in both a historic real world and other worlds, which are accessed through doors. The story is brilliantly told in many layers and I didn't piece everything together until at least the half way mark. I always enjoy a historical setting for my fantasy too.

Alix wrote some warm characters who we bond with but also has a way of creating diverse, Dickensian villians too. The writing style is great too with hints of humor at every turn.

Unlike some high fantasy there are no epic wars and a minimum of hereditary skills and special objects, this is warm and compelling.

Fantasy at its best 9/10
