Reading with Ella - Book 15

Ivy and Bean (#1) - by Annie Barrows

This is our first Ivy and Bean book, and we actually started a series at no.1!

I've never generally been a fan of books featuring "naughty kids" as protagonists. I wasn't an especially naughty kid myself and I resented the extra attention the naughty kids got in school as well as how they could derail an fun activity for me, even if that was because the adult in charge had to deal with them and the rest of us had to sit there waiting for our whatever to resume. I think Ella feels the same if we judge from her weekly moans about classmates Dexter, Mercedes and others.

So it is with surprise that we both liked Ivy and Bean books. Yes Bean is naughty but the story was funny and engaging. Can't say I got on with the illustrations, the faces definitely gave me uncanny valley vibes. I also felt sorry for Bean's big sister.

Ella wants to say - I liked Ivy best, and the bit when they climbed across the back gardens.

Horrible illustrations, but great characters 6/10

No Staging Outcome on Ella's books as we read them a few times and put them in the bookbox when she grows out of them.
