Reading with Ella - Book 6

Zoey and Sassafras - Dragons and Marshmallows by Asia Citro

So it is possible to find new children's books that are as good as the classics. It's not all Billie B Brown and weird dolphin stories.

This was fantastic. Pro-science, pro-feminist, and pro-magic! Zoey loves science but she's also a well adjusted happy kid. It just so happens that she is a girl and she is black. This is not a plot point, just awesome to have some positive diversity in children's books. The plot is to do with caring for injured magical animals. My child loves magic and loves playing vets, so this was right up her street.

Children's books often suffer from a 'chunky' writing style in an attempt to be simple enough for a child to read and understand. The author here managed to not fall into that trap and the writing was simple and elegant.

Fantastic. 9/10
